Installing smoke alarms

  • Ensure that all products you purchase come with an approved testing laboratory listing. (https://www.osha.gov/dts/otpca/nrtl/nrtllist.html has all approved laboratories listed)

  • We suggest installing a smoke alarm inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area such as the hallway, and on every level of the home. This includes the basement, and attic even though most homes in Florida do not have basements.

  • If you have a level without a bedroom, such as a living room, you should install alarms in the living room or near the stairway to the upper level, or in both.

  • If you have a basement, install the alarm near the stairs, on the ceiling.

  • Install smoke detectors at least 10 feet away from ovens to help prevent false activation.

  • Mount smoke alarms on the walls with no more than 12 inches to the ceiling from the top of the alarm, and no less than 4 inches from the ceiling.

  • If you a pitched ceiling, install the alarm within 3 feet of the center of the peak but at least 4 inches below the peak.

  • Keep the installations away from windows, doors, and air ducts to keep interference minimal.

  • Do not paint, or put stickers and other items on the smoke alarm, it will interfere with operation.

  • Use interlocking smoke alarms, that wire together, and ensure they are the same brand.

  • Use dual sensor alarms to maximize the chances of protection.

Test your smoke alarms

  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.

  • Some smoke alarms have non-replaceable 10-year batteries and are supposed to last 10 years. If they beep, or chirp for low battery, the smoke alarm should be replaced.

  • Smoke alarms with replaceable batteries should be replaced annually, or when they beep/chirp.
